Devils & Demons: Film/TV

UGO's favorite devils and demons in film and TV.

While ghosts and aliens may be more popular characters in the genre of supernatural horror, no beasties get under your skin more than devils and demons. Maybe it's the threat of eternal damnation - there's a lot more at stake than just being haunted or abducted. Whatever the fascination and the draw may be, devils and demons continue to run amok in cinema and television, sometimes sending chills down our spines (The Exorcist) and sometimes making us laugh at the absurdity of it all (The Ninth Gate). Here are some of the most memorable creatures from hell that have appeared in film and television.

Evil Dead

The Evil Dead was both written and directed by a young Sam Raimi at the dawn of the '80s. Set in the wooded mountains of Tennessee, five college friends rent an old cabin for a weekend but end up fighting for their souls. In the cabin's basement, Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Scotty (Hal Delrich) discover the "Book of the Dead." Bound in flesh and inked in human blood, the unholy text awakens evil spirits in the surrounding woods. One by one, the friends are possessed by demonic spirits forcing those remaining to dispose of them in the only possible way: Bodily Dismemberment! On a small budget and a skeleton crew, The Evil Dead succeeds in every area where most horror movies fail. It'll swallow your soul. Groovy.
