Devils & Demons: Film/TV

UGO's favorite devils and demons in film and TV.

While ghosts and aliens may be more popular characters in the genre of supernatural horror, no beasties get under your skin more than devils and demons. Maybe it's the threat of eternal damnation - there's a lot more at stake than just being haunted or abducted. Whatever the fascination and the draw may be, devils and demons continue to run amok in cinema and television, sometimes sending chills down our spines (The Exorcist) and sometimes making us laugh at the absurdity of it all (The Ninth Gate). Here are some of the most memorable creatures from hell that have appeared in film and television.

The Exorcist

William Friedkin's adaptation of William Peter Blatty's best-selling novel made quite the impression back in 1973 (and still does today). Reports of people fainting from stress and fear in the theatre were widespread, which only increased the film's popularity and somewhat otherworldly power. A true cinematic classic, The Exorcist is near perfect on almost every level - a horror film that could only be made back in the '70s, when horror audiences were, well, older and unspoiled by greedy studio execs looking for watered-down PG-13 scares. The story of a young girl who becomes inexplicably possessed by a vulgar demon works so well because Friedkin firmly sets his story in the everyday world of suburban America - we get the sense that this could actually happen, and may be happening right now. The now-infamous shock scenes involving crucifixes and pea soup aside, the film is actually scarier in its quiet moments.
