A Wookie is Man's Best Friend.
Most Star Wars fans know that Chewbacca swore a life debt to Han Solo, but most don't know why.
We learn in the novel The Hutt Gambit, that before he was a smuggler, Han was Lieutenant Han Solo of the Imperial Navy. I guess Wookiee skin rugs were all the rage back then, because on one disturbing mission, Han was ordered to skin an unconscious Chewbacca and refused. This angered his superiors and Han was drummed out of the Navy. When Chewbacca recovered and realized what had happened, he swore a life debt to Han, and the two were inseparable from that day on.
