Is Guillermo del Toro Directing Godzilla or Not?

In breaking news, Guillermo del Toro is and isn't directing the giant lizard movie? Sorta.

The fine folks over at Latino Review were quoted yesterday as saying an offer had gone out to Guillermo del Toro to direct Legendary Pictures' adaptation of Godzilla, which is apparently being shaped from an unassociated spec script titled Pacific Rim.

The dauntless Drew McWeeny of HitFix got on the horn with our favorite jolly Mexican director to see what he had to say. See if you can read any subtlety or mischievious hinting in del Toro's words:

"I am not involved in Godzilla at all, I haven't read it or plan to read it.  Nor have I been approached to direct it."

So, that's a no. "N"-to-the-"O". As tempting as it would be to see Doug Jones climb into the famous Godzilla suit, or Ron Perlman play a cigar-chomping general who has to bring the beast down, it ain't gonna happen.

The actual film del Toro in working on, At the Mountains of Madness, is going swimingly. A handsome reporter quoted the director a few weeks ago on bringing H.P. Lovecraft's world to life:

"I've been thinking of those monsters for twenty years. Fortunately for me no one has done monsters like the ones I'm doing. About two weeks ago we were visited by Dennis Muren. He looked at the designs, and he turned to us and said, 'No one has seen monsters like this ever.' I was like, [boyish grin] 'Yeah!' I was happy and vindicated and all that. All I'm telling you is to me some of these monsters are more real than many of my cousins."
