Getting Serious

Paul Furfari: You've done action movies with The Marine and 12 Rounds, but Legendary was your first drama. What was that like?

John Cena: It was real cool, especially because I liked the story. In reading the script, I didn't think it would surprise people; the part wasn't too far fetched for me to believe in. I really thought I could get the point across and I really liked the story.

Paul Furfari: You actually had the screenwriter (Jon Posey, in the role of Stu Tennent, the wrestling coach) on set with you. Did he coach you at all, give you any advice?

John Cena: No. He was actually just overwhelmed with how good his words came to life. The entire group was really put together right. From director to the producers and the cast, it really came together quite well.

Paul Furfari: You're from a family of many brothers. Any learned experience from your upbringing that you brought to this movie?

John Cena: Absolutely. I have four siblings. You have ups and downs, you have fights and reconciliations, some more severe than others and this was just an extension of that.

Paul Furfari: Did you have any teaching moments with your younger brothers?

John Cena: I'm the second oldest, but I was the one that was driven to athletics and especially my middle two brothers followed suit. So there was a bunch of coaching and mentoring involved.

Paul Furfari: Did you ever do any wrestling?

John Cena: I did a basic amateur wrestling course in college because I was getting my degree in exercise physiology. Just in case I wanted to go into the field of PE, I took a bunch of electives.
