The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog is reporting that Marvel has officially offered the role of Captain America to none other than Chris Evans. This concludes months of speculation regarding who would take up the shield as name after name circulated about town - some familiar (John Krasinski, Channing Tatum, Ryan Phillipe) and others entirely unknown (Scott Porter, Wilson Blethel, Mike Vogel). The article is careful to mention, however, that Evans, who audiences will next see in both The Losers and Scott Pilgrim, has not yet accepted the role.
Why the hell wouldn't one immediately accept an offer to play the most famous American in all of fanboy history? It might, we suspect, have something to do with the nine-picture commitment that comes with the role - including three Cap films, The Avengers, and a limited number of appearances in any further Marvel adventures. That's a helluva way to become indebted to a studio that'll seemingly own you for the better part of a decade.
That said, Evans might very well want to rinse away the stigma of the ill-received Fantastic Four with a much more promising turn in a far more successful lineage of films. With enough charisma and talent to make the character his own, there's certainly no reason to expect that Evans wouldn't make an ideal Captain America. Now let's just see if he says yes.
