Best Fantasy Guns

Never bring a sword to a gunfight -- Indiana Jones taught us that. But sometimes we need something a little more unreal than a normal gun. In this article, we'll run down our favorite fantastical firearms.

They say that the sword is the hero's best friend, but isn't it better to carry a gun? These guns are totally ridiculous, completely impossible and undeniably awesome. In this feature, we'll take a trip through time and share the awesomest fantasy guns ever made, with a stop or two in sci-fi as well. From flintlocks to cannons, these projectile weapons are the stuff of legend. Praise the Lord (of Chaos), pass the ammunition and read the Best Fantasy Guns.

ZF-1

Say what you will about Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, but the dude does know how to make a pretty sweet gun. The main villain of The Fifth Element is seen here with his custom ZF-1, which boasts a machine gun, a rocket launcher, a flamethrower, a freeze ray, a poison dart shooter and a net launcher, all in one convenient package. It even has a "replay" feature which discharges a second set of rounds to the same target you just hit. Just don't press that red button.

Lawgiver Mk II

With a new Judge Dredd movie incoming, let's remember just how awesome the Lawgiver Mk II is. The sidearm of choice for the Judges of Mega-CIty One, this brutal hand cannon not only pumps acres of lead into perps and mutants but also boasts some very useful features, including heat-seeking bullets, a flare gun and a DNA lock that makes it impossible for anybody but the Judge it's issued to to use it. What happens if they try? A massive explosion and death, of course.

TR-116

The Star Trek universe wasn't much for spitting lead - when you have a phaser, why would you bother? But an exception was made for the TR-1156 rifle, which first showed up on Deep Space Nine. This powerful sniper rifle has been modified with a miniature transporter device, the same type used to beam Starfleet officers down to planetary surfaces. But the TR-116 uses it for a much nastier purpose - teleporting fired bullets through walls to strike targets without a line of sight. Really slick stuff.

Bonejack Rifle

When you're hunting vampires, you need to pack some heavy ordinance. Blade: Trinity introduces the Bone Jack, a modified Winchester Model 1887 that has been seriously decked out to pack some serious heat. Not only does it launch the "Sun Dog" bullets that kill vampires instantly, but it also has separate barrels to launch grenades and wooden stakes. This is a serious beast that would make Buffy proud, but it barely figured into the movie. What a waste.

Gristle Gun

If you're looking for a fantasy gun that you can smuggle through a metal detector, why not take the Gristle Gun from eXistenZ for a spin? This seriously disturbing firearm is made from the remnants of a disgusting Chinese meal by protagonist Ted Pikul, and it shoots teeth. Composed entirely of organic matter, the gristle gun is a surprisingly deadly weapon. Of course, it's quite possible that it's not actually real, as the whole damn movie is a crazy virtual reality house of cards, but whatevs.
