Released in the spring of 1996, Resident Evil became one of the first breakout hits for the Playstation. Players jumped into the shoes of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, members of Raccoon City's elite S.T.A.R.S. Alpha strike team sent to investigate brutal, cannibalistic attacks reported outside of town near what was thought to be an abandoned mansion.

When they arrive they find out the report of the house's vacancy has been greatly exaggerated. Instead they find it to be home to a secret bioweapons facility that has had an industrial accident and turned the residents into walking dead. It's their job to investigate the reasons why, rescue their teammates and escape the increasingly dangerous beasts they find, and all with only a limited supply of save points, health packs and ammo.

The game has sold well on nearly every system it's been released on, including GameCube and the DS. While its controls are often thought to be the worst in gaming, director Shinji Mikami has been quoted as saying it was intentional so as to create more tension in the game (sure).
