The sequel picks up six months
after the events of the first game when rookie cop Leon Kennedy and
Claire Redfield meet up in Raccoon City shortly after the T-virus has
leaked into the sewer system and infected the population. The pair is
separated and the player plays each character's adventure separately.
This was also possible in the first game, but in RE2 whichever
character they play first can affect the game for the character they
play second, either by allowing access to certain areas or by picking up
certain weapons.
The game was released to rave reviews. Fans ate it up as nearly five
million copies were sold. Some critics had issues with the still awful
control system and continued use of pre-rendered backgrounds but, truth
be told, not many consumers cared. The game upped the action and
tension, expanded on the storyline and gave us two much beloved
characters.
It also added a mini game, "The 4th Survivor," where players take
control of one of Umbrella's special ops teams, Hunk, and escape the
city, which itself had a secret game where you can play through the
mission as a giant piece of tofu armed with only a knife.
