American Werewolf in London - Transformation scene
Special effects used to be a whole lot creepier before everything got computerized. Talented craftsmen used rubber, latex, and hand-mixed blood solutions to create disturbing prosthetics, masks, and other horrific accessories that were clamped on real actors and stuntmen. And the actuality of those methods resulted in effects that were seriously terrifying because they actually looked real, not like a glossy lump of pixels. A perfect example is the Rick Baker-devised effects for John Landis's An American Werewolf In London, which combine robotics, prosthetics and tons of hair to evoke the most painful lycanthropic transfiguration of all time on poor David Naughton. Watching his skin stretch and deform as he inexorably becomes a beast is utterly terrifying. The effects were so impressive that the Academy created a special category of the Oscars in 1981 just to honor them.
