Greystone Roundtable

The Roundtable is a semimonthly forum for area students, ministers, and other interested individuals who meet for two hours to discuss a variety of texts related to theology, biblical studies, ethics, and pastoral theology. Led by a Fellow of the Institute, the Roundtable features a wide range of texts, both classic and contemporary, with a focus on texts which reflect on matters of enduring significance. The Roundtable began with discussion of Gerald Hiestand and Todd Wilson’s, The Pastor Theologian: Resurrecting an Ancient Vision (Zondervan, 2015), a proposal for retrieving the classical model of theologians working productively as theologians in the context of pastoral ministry. The current long-term project is reading and discussion of Herman Bavinck’s magisterial Reformed Dogmatics, interspersed with readings from Gregory the Great’s The Book of Pastoral Rule, Franciscus Junius’s A Treatise on True Theology, Richard B. Hays, Reading Backwards: Figural Christology and the Fourfold Gospel Witness, and John Swinton, Raging with Compassion: Pastoral Responses to the Problem of Evil. The Roundtable selections will often complement upcoming course offerings at the Institute, providing a kind of unofficial preparation for them.
