Certificate in Theological Studies (CTS)
Purpose
The six-course and thesis Certificate in Theological Studies is a rigorous program designed for ministers and theological students who desire to gain specialist knowledge of the Christian Scriptures, theology, and history from the perspective of confessional Reformed catholicity. As one of the two signature certificate programs at Greystone, the CTS is complementary to traditional seminary training for ministry and scholarship, and well suited for a range of students seeking continuing education, training for further research, or refreshment in theological study. Particularly with its focus on training for further work in biblical, theological, and ethical studies, the Certificate functions in manner analogous to a Master of Theology (Th.M. or M.Th.) program in American and international institutions. The goal of the program is to foster and stimulate constructive theological thinking and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Program Features
Certificate courses are offered across the range of biblical, theological, and historical studies, and taught by the Greystone faculty and visiting lecturers.
Students enjoy access to the physical and electronic library resources at Greystone as well as the library resources of the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh.
Greystone consciously endeavors to blend rigorous study with times of fellowship, hospitality, and prayer, are thus designed principally for residential study. However, all courses and events are also available for online students and for auditors.
Certificate courses are also regularly offered in connection with Greystone’s moral theology initiative, the Center for the Study of Ethics and Technology (CSET), and with Greystone’s Lydia Center for Women and Families.
Greystone courses qualify as credit courses in Master’s degree programs for some institutions. Students should consult with their institution’s registrar to learn if a Greystone course qualifies.
Program Structure
The successful student completes six courses – “Reformed Catholicity” and “Tools and Instruments” plus four additional Certificate courses – with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above, passes an examination at Greystone of reading facility in each of the three primary theological languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Latin), and submits one research thesis which is examined by the Greystone Academic Committee. The research paper may be submitted for review at any time after the completion of five (5) full courses. Students have up to five (5) years to complete all requirements for the Certificate before it is necessary to apply for reinstatement for an additional year. Upon completion of all requirements for the Certificate, the Academic Committee votes as a body on each candidate.
