The Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility, which was developed by the National Notary Association (NNA) and the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), is now available to Notary officials and state lawmakers.
The model code is a set of ethical standards that Notaries are encouraged to follow to ensure the integrity of the Notary profession. The code is based on the NNA’s Code of Professional Responsibility, which has been in place for more than 30 years.
“The Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility is an important tool for Notary officials and state lawmakers to use as they consider how to best protect the public interest and ensure the highest levels of professional conduct by Notaries,” said NNA President and CEO Tom O’Connor.
The model code is available on the NNA’s website.
The Uniform Law Commission has released the latest version of its proposed Model Notary Act, which it says will help Notaries and state lawmakers keep up with the rapidly changing landscape of the notarial profession.
The new Act, which is available online, updates the previous version of the Act released in 2016 and includes provisions for electronic notarization, remote notarization, and changes to Notary signing agent regulations.
“The Model Notary Act is an important tool for Notaries and state lawmakers as they seek to modernize the notarial profession and keep up with the changing needs of consumers and businesses,” said ULC Secretary John D. Ellis.
The Model Notary Act is not law, but is designed to serve as a template for state legislatures to consider when updating their own Notary laws. The ULC says the Act reflects the latest best practices in the notarial profession and takes into account the evolving needs of consumers and businesses.
“The Commission is committed to ensuring that the Model Notary Act keeps pace with the changing landscape of the notarial profession,” Ellis said. “We encourage Notaries and state lawmakers to review the new Act and consider its adoption in their jurisdictions.”
