Medical Assistant Degree

Per Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations section 1366.3 (a)(2), in a secondary, postsecondary, or adult education program in a public school authorized by the Department of Education, in a community college program provided for in Part 48 of Division 7 of the Education Code, or a postsecondary institution accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education under Sections 94130 or 94311 of the Education Code.

The medical assistant program at Delaware County Community College, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education under recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board, offers both a certificate and an associate degree track.

Students will study courses such as: World of Healthcare, Tour of the Medical Front Office, Introduction to Medical Terminology, Medical Records, Emergencies in the Medical Office, Medical Equipment and Supplies, Introduction to Anatomy, Anatomy: Landmarks and Divisions, Vital Signs, Safety in the Medical Office, Medical Insurance, Electronic Records Ethical and Legal Issues Blood Testing, Patient Exam, Pharmacology, Preparing and Administering Medications, as well as others.

The Associate of Science degree in Medical Assistance requires that you have already earned a diploma in the field (offered at certain locations, possibly online), which makes this a great way to take the education you learned from one school and continue it here with a unique outlook on medical assisting.

Upon completing your training you will be able to add on a clinical externship covering patient care, medical office administration, phlebotomy, and EKG. However, it is highly recommended to do so through the American Association of Medical Assistants Once a student has passed this exam, their certification remains valid for 60 months.

At Dakota County Technical College, you will be able to take part in a medical assistant program that was recommended by the Medical Assisting Education Board. Most programs offer classes that prepare the student for work in both the clinical and the administrative parts of the office.

Certification may be achieved by taking the CMA (AAMA) Certification Examination offered by the AAMA Certifying Board in consultation with the National Board of Medical Examiners , which also administers many national exams for physicians. Usually, the certification agency will consider the crime, how long it has been, and the student's recent conduct within the community in deciding whether to allow them to complete the exam.
