Year of the dragon
With leading roles in the wildly popular
Game of Thrones
and the latest
installment of the action franchise,
Terminator Genisys,
Emilia Clarke is on
fire. She talks to Ruben V. Nepales about
her thrilling ascent to the throne
I didn’t expect Daenerys
Targaryen, one of the
strongest contenders to
the Iron Throne, to hobble
into the room in crutches.
“I fractured my hip like an
idiot,” explains Emilia Clarke,
who plays the mother of
dragons in HBO’s
Game of
Thrones
, one of the most
successful TV series of all
time.
She’s wearing her hair
in its natural chestnut
color, and without the long
platinum-blond wig of
Daenerys, Emilia claims
she can walk anonymously
almost anywhere. “I’m hardly
recognized, which enables
me to lead a very normal
life outside of filming,” says
the full-lipped thespian,
who often lands on “most
desirable women” lists. “I’m
able to lead the life of a
normal girl, which is really
helpful as an actor because I
can be as human as possible,
and then I’ll learn how to
play them [humans].”
Her current life as an
actor is far from normal,
though, as the Emmy-
nominated British actress
finally breaks on to the
big screen in
Terminator
Genisys
, playing the
franchise’s heroine Sarah
Connor as a young woman
and co-starring with Arnold
Schwarzenegger. “Arnold
was trying to show me a
dance move,” she tells me
as she parks her crutches.
“I took it to a whole other
special-effects level, so this
is the result.” The 28-year-
old with a kooky sense of
humor has been known to make
up creative excuses for her
fractured hip — breakdancing
with “Ah-nuld” and parkour
are just a couple of tongue-in-
cheek examples she randomly
throws out — and throughout
our interview her offbeat wit
shines through.
What surprised you
the most about Arnold
Schwarzenegger, and what
were your first impressions
of him?
