Sleeping inaboulangerie
Paris issaid tohavemorehotels thananywhereelse in theworld, andhasalways
beenknown for its fancy “grandedame”stays. Butmoreandmorehotelsare
eschewing theclassicapproach forsomethingabitquirkier– like thenewHôtel
Molitor, setaroundan iconic 1930spool, or thesoon-to-openflagshipof the
design-ledGeneratorhostels, anoldofficeblocknear theCanal Saint-Martin.
Ona recent visit, I stayedat theHôtel duPetitMoulin, a 17th-centurybuilding
in thehipMarais thatwasaboulangerieat thestartof the20thcenturyandstill
hasaclassicboulangerie frontage. Its theatrical, slightlymismatchedcurrent form
wascreatedby the fashiondesignerChristianLacroix,whodesignedevery room
individually, and theeccentricitygoes further– thehotelwelcomescatsaswell as
dogs, and laysonstreet-art toursof thearea.
