In today’s hypercompetitive
environment, this would seem to be
an unorthodox path to corpo-
rate success. We tend to think of
CEOsasbigpersonalities,people(usu-
allymen)whocommandaroom.Butas
businesswriter JimCollinspointsout,
themost capable executives generally
operatewithhumility andpassion for
thework,ratherthanfluffingtheiregos.
Myown researchhas ledme toa simi-
lar conclusion.
In my recent book,
Invisibles
, I
profiled a variety of accomplished
professionalswhoachievedsuccessnot
through seekingattention,asweare so
often told is thepath to the top, butby
beingself-effacing teamplayers.In this
regard,Engelbert verymuch fits the
mold.Itall comesback to“partnership
culture,” she said. “You need to have
that collaborative environment.”
Certainly, Engelbert is not a my-
way-or-the-highway leader.“Wework
in teams, and the teams can set the
rules,”she said.“Wegivepeople ideas,
but theydecide.”This approach leads
to a remarkable degree of individual
autonomy, given the size and com-
plexity ofDeloitte’s operation.
While Engelbert has settled quite
comfortably into her new role, there
areoneor twowrinkles that still need
ironing, suchas adapting to life in the
spotlight. “The notoriety I’ve gotten
so far is a little intimidating,”she said.
ButEngelbert is also aware that, like
it or not, a higher profile comeswith
the job. “It’s part of being the face of
the firm.”

Ifyou’veeverhad thegnawing—ormoreaccurately, puncturing—
suspicion thatmosquitoes loveyouandyourbloodmore thanany
ofyour friends’, youmightbeonto something. According toa study
published this spring in the journal PLOSOne, attractiveness tomosquitoes
appears tobe tied togeneticmarkers. To test thishypothesis, JamesLogan, of
theLondonSchool ofHygieneandTropicalMedicine, andhis colleaguesasked
18pairsof identical twinsand19pairsof fraternal twins todo theunthinkable:
stickonehandeach intoa tube filledwith20hungryAedes aegyptimosquitoes
and letnature take its course. The results?
Identical twins (thosewithall the
samegenes)provedequallytastytothe littlebiters,whilefraternal twins (those
withdifferentgenes)varied intheirattractiveness,withoneoftenreceiving
significantlymoreorfewerbitesthanhisorhertwin.
Loganargues that those
whodon’t getbittenmightproduceanaturally repellentodor that keeps insects
away. Scientists, once theyuncover the responsiblegenes, coulduse these
findings todevelopultra-effective repellents,whichcould reducebitesandgoa
longway towarderadicatingmosquito-bornediseases. Until then, you justmight
behamperedwithageneticmarker that,well, sucks.
