In fairness to Elmhurst, one of
its product’s selling points is that
it is
not
coconut water. “It is such a
polarizing flavor,” says Stacey Inglis,
who is spearheadingBananaWater’s
marketingpush.“Weaskedourselves,
‘Wheredo refreshment,nutrition,and
taste meet?’ It was like a lightbulb
went on: bananas, of course.” If for
some unfathomable reason you don’t
like the taste of bananas, the drink
alsocomes inpassion fruitandmango.

the goodnews is that one of themain
contenders comes from the same tree.
According to some, the superfood star
of 2016will be coconutmilk, coconut
water’s smoother cousin,which canbe

offers it as a non-dairy alternative to
milk.) “It has amuchbigger personal-
ity,”saysBadaracco.“Ifcoconutwater is
theperfecthostess,coconutmilkcould
be the lifeof theparty.”
Another thing coconut milk has
going for it is versatility: It’s a drink,
it’s a curry sauce, it’s a body scrub.As
part of a water-milk double act, the
fruit,ordrupe,of
Cocosnucifera
isgoing
tobe very hard toknockoff its perch.
“Coconutscandobothsweetorsavory,
much like the pomegranate,” says
Badaracco. “LikeMadonna, the sur-
vivorsare theones thatareable tokeep
reinventing themselves every year.”
For others, like the açaí berry—

superfoods—the glory days could be
behind them.

“Callme Ishmael”—butmake sureyou’reusing the right accent. According
toa recent studypublished in the journal Nature Communications
byDalhousieUniversityPh.D. candidateMauricioCantor andbiology
professorHalWhitehead, clansof spermwhales (likeMelville’s famousMobyDick)
actually communicatewith their ownunique “dialects.”
Inotherwords,dependingon

(or“codas”) slightlydifferent from thatofotherclans.
After studying two clansof
whalesnear theGalápagos Islands and thenexamining18yearsof data, the scientists
discovered that the region ishome toat least fiveuniquedialects. Rather thanbeing
inherited, these specific clickpatterns are learned sociallyandpasseddown from
generation togeneration—allowing like-minded individuals to communicate, cooperate,
and formdeeper bonds. The takeaway?Likehumans, chimpanzees, and some speciesof
bird, spermwhalesmay actually exhibit signs of complex culture.
