SUMMER 2012
It’s another huge summer for concerts this year, with high-
lights ranging from reformed original members to solid
standbys that sell out every time they tour.
One of the biggest announcements camewhen the
Beach Boys released a series of dates that would include
BrianWilson. Just how big? The Boys haven’t touredwith
Wilson inmore than two decades.
Another reunited band, Van Halen has hit the road
(and put out a new record,
Different Kind of Truth
) with
original frontman David Lee Roth. Though not a complete
reunion— bassist Michael Anthony’s role is being filled by
Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son— it’s still a showwor-
thy of high kicks and stadium sing-alongs.
Other acts touringwith newmaterial include BobDylan
(who is working on his 35th album), Elton John, Madonna,
and Radiohead.
Another hot summer tour, literally, is one featuringDiana
Krall. Dubbed Summer Nights, theU.S. run is the jazz chan-
teuse’s first (andbiggest) since2009. The40-city tour kicked
off inMarch andwill run through the summer. And then
there’s the “Last Summer on Earth” tour featuring Barenaked
Ladies, Blues Traveler, BigHead Todd& theMonsters, and
Cracker. Expect lots of extended jams when the tour rolls
through amphitheaters beginning in July.
But the list of summer shows goes on— TomPetty& the
Heartbreakers, RedHot Chili Peppers,
BruceSpringsteen
,
DaveMatthews Band, JimmyBuffett, Sting, Santana (who is
