There are two methods that press brakes can bend steel. The first, or bottom bending, is when the ram presses metal to the bottom. Bottom bending can produce precise bends and is less dependent on the press brake. The problem is that each tool is designed for a specific type of bend. You will need to purchase a brand new tool for each angle. Air bending creates an air pocket between the die's bottom and the ram. This allows the operator flexibility in accommodating any spring back provided by the material. These types are only necessary to be replaced if the material is too thick. The drawback of air bending is its inability to accurately bend the material. This means that the ram will need to be changed accordingly.

The first generation of press brakes had only one axis that could bend. These machines were far less flexible than modern machines that have 12 or more programmable movement axes. Modern presses brakes are extremely precise and can create visual representations of the final result to assist the operator. The setup time has been greatly reduced by modern computers. These computers can quickly determine the optimal settings based upon materials used, their dimensions, and desired results. Back in the day, these calculations were done manually.

Hydraulic press brakes are hydraulically applied to the ram to reduce its height, rather than relying only on mechanicals. They may contain more than one cylinder, giving the operator more control over the bend. It produces a precise and configurable bend. The hydraulic press brakes are similar to mechanical presses but have some disadvantages. Hydraulic press brakes cannot exceed the rated tonnage. You may prefer mechanical press brakes if you need flexibility.
