Do not use Social Media Follow Buttons
Wow that headline got people's attention. I am suggesting that you change any social media buttons you have on your website to
share
buttons and not follow buttons. Most websites that have added a line of social network icon buttons like the ones in the image below have coded them so that they go straight to the website's social media profile page. This is where new visitors can opt in to follow your posts. This is a great way to add one new follower. If you coded the button so that it sent a message to all that person's followers, recommending your blog post, website or particular page, you will potentially get 300+ people looking at your content. Do the math. If you use social media follow buttons you will get one new follower per click. If you use share buttons you potentially reach hundreds of people. Guess which button types I use? Check out the twitter and facebook share buttons at the bottom of this page.

The next question is where do you put the row of buttons, at the top, side or bottom? If you have high impact content above the fold at the top of your website page then it is a good idea to place your buttons at the top right. That way once visitors to your page have viewed the amazing photograph,
infographic or video clip they will want to instantly tell their friends. If the buttons are visible close to the item they were looking at you are making it easy for them to do so. Add a call to action
in the form of words like, "Tell your friends about this page now" or "Share this page".
If the structure of your page is in the form of a long article or blog post then placing the button at the bottom of your page may be a better option. When people finish scrolling down the page, having read down to your last paragraph, give them something next to do. Suggest that they share the contents of this page with their friends using social media. Provide the easy to use buttons where they can quickly find them. Do not make your visitors have to scroll all the way back to the top of your page to use the buttons. There are a number of tutorials on the internet that provide instruction on how to construct Share buttons.

Many people are under the misguided belief that if they add lots of comments that include links back to their own website, on other peoples facebook posts and blogs, they will get extra Google Juice
. This is not so. Most Social Media sites and blogs make sure that any links added to their comment sections are shown as Nofollow
. That means that the website that is the subject of the link will not benefit in search engine result page SERP positioning from that added link. The website might get some extra traffic from visitors to the original site but it will not get a better SERP position although. That said, Google does note how many times your site gets mentioned.
