Configuring the parameter settings
You can configure administrative processes and options for your DS-Client.
To configure the parameter settings:
1. On the Setup menu, click Configuration.
2. Click the Parameters tab.
3. Under Admin Process, do the following:
a) To schedule the Daily Admin process, select the Daily start check box, and then enter the time of the day when you want the process to start.
b) To schedule the Weekly Admin process, select the Weekly start check box, and then enter the time of the day when you want the process to start.
NOTE: If you want the admin processes to be performed on demand only, clear the check boxes.
c) If you have scheduled the Weekly Admin process, in the Every box, select the day of the week on which you want the Weekly Admin process to run.
d) To reboot the DS-Client computer after an Admin process has completed, select the Reboot after admin check box.
e) In the CDP Strategy box, specify how the DS-Client should handle backups with Continuous Data Protection (CDP) enabled when the Daily or Weekly Admin process is scheduled to run. The options are as follows:
• Skip – Backup sets with CDP enabled will continue to run while the Admin process is in progress. However, DS-Client does not perform the System Admin process on these backups.
• Suspend – Backup sets with CDP enabled will be suspended while the Admin process is in progress. However, DS-Client performs the System Admin process on these backups. The backups will restart after the Admin process is finished.
4. Under Database options, do the following:
a) In the DS-Client database backup box, select when you want to save the DS-Client database to the DS-System. The options are as follows:
• with Daily Admin – DS-Client database backup is performed as part of the Daily Admin process.
• with Weekly Admin – DS-Client database backup is performed as part of the Weekly Admin process.
• None – DS-Client database backup is not performed.
IMPORTANT: We recommend that you back up the DS-Client database on a regular basis.
b) In the Keep DS-Client database dump file box, select how you want to handle the DS-Client database dump file. The option are as follows:
• Do not delete – Dump file remains in the DS-Client buffer until it is overwritten.
• Delete after successful backup – Dump file is deleted after it has been successfully backed up to the DS-System.
• Always delete – Dump file is always deleted after the Daily Admin or Weekly Admin process.
c) In the Keep DS-Client logs box, select how long you want to retain the DS-Client logs on the DS-Client.
5. Under Backup/Restore options, do the following:
a) In the Attempt to reconnect [...] box, enter how many times the DS-Client automatically attempts to reconnect to the DS-System if the connection is lost during a backup or restore process.
b) In the at [...] minute intervals box, enter the interval, in minutes, between reconnection attempts. The default is 5.
c) To skip running a pre-scan on all scheduled backups to speed up the backup process, select the Skip pre-scan for scheduled backups check box.
6. In the DS-Client Buffer box, specify the local disk location that the DS-Client uses to save buffer dumps for backups configured with the Use Buffer option. Windows DS-Client also saves its own database dumps from the Daily Admin and Weekly Admin processes in this location.
IMPORTANT: The DS-Client database server must be able to dump to this location. This is an important consideration if you are using a remote database. For more information, see
“Database backup policies”.
7. In the Local Storage Path box, specify the path that will be used for backups configured to use the following features that require a local storage path.
• Self-contained backups – If you enter a path, you will be able to select this type of backup. For more information, see
“Self-contained backups”.
• Local-only backups – Your service provider must enable the Local Storage tool and Local-only Capacity tool and assign a maximum storage amount for the DS-Client. For more information, see
“Instant recovery backups”.
• Instant recovery backups – Your service provider must enable the Local Storage Tool and the Local-only Capacity Tool, and assign a maximum Local-only capacity for the DS-Client. If you enter a path, you will be able to select this type of backup. (See
“Instant recovery backups”.)
IMPORTANT: Ensure there is sufficient disk space available to manage the additional data stored in the DS-Client database and that the DS-Client service account can access the local storage path. If you specify a network location, the DS-Client service account must have network access privileges. By default, the Local System Account cannot access a network location.
8. If you are using a Linux DS-Client, under Instant Recovery Storage Options, specify the location where the instant recovery backup data will be saved.
NOTE: You must configure a ZFS storage volume located on a remote FreeBSD device that is accessible by the DS-Client. Each DS-Client must be able to mount to a unique ZFS storage volume via NFS. You must install an NFS client on the DS-Client machine.
a) In the ZFS mount path box, specify the path on the remote machine where the ZFS storage volume is mounted.
b) In the IP/DNS box, type the IP address or DNS name of the ZFS storage volume. Do not use the local loopback (127.0.0.1).
c) In the User name box, type the user name for the DS-Client to access the ZFS storage volume.
d) In the Password box, type the password for the user credentials.
e) Beside the ZFS volume name box, click [...] to choose the ZFS storage volume. This is the location where instant recovery backup data will be stored.
NOTE: You must update the /etc/rc.conf file on the remote FreeBSD device with the following line: mountd_flags="-rS"
9. Click OK.
