Gestational diabetes and a healthy baby? Yes.
It can be a scary diagnosis, but it’s one that’s fairly common.
One out of ten pregnancies in the United States is affected by gestational diabetes every year, so know that you’re not alone.
And know that it doesn’t mean you had diabetes before you conceived or after your child is born. Understanding the risks of having type 2 diabetes during pregnancy and what to do if you have premature labor can help ensure a healthy life for your child.
Millions of mothers experience diabetes while pregnant, but the placenta offers support to the fetus when it develops. When hormones are released which suppress insulin production in mothers, they may need more insulin to compensate and also face a condition known as insulin resistance.
Gestational diabetes can start when a pregnant woman’s body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose in blood cannot be changed into energy. When glucose builds up in the blood, it is called hyperglycemia
Regardless of the cause, gestational diabetes can be managed with a plan from your doctor and some work on your part. Remember to ask questions-and for help! There are many ways to combat gestational diabetes.
How you can treat it
Gestational diabetes, while treatable, can be harmful to you and your baby.
If you have diabetes, your treatment focuses on blood sugar control. You might use special meal plans and regular exercise to help maintain normal levels. You could also be testing your blood or taking insulin injections a few times a day.
Though this diagnosis may have you feeling anxious and apprehensive, it is important to know there are ways of managing your diabetes during pregnancy.

Diet and exercise are your friends
The key to managing gestational diabetes is a healthy diet, and your doctor can help identify the best diet for you.
Exercise is very important when you have diabetes and are pregnant. Find out what level of activity your doctor recommends, create an exercise plan with your doctor, look at our resources to keep yourself motivated, and make sure to take care of your condition by monitoring it regularly.
