CHAPTER 3: THE WASHINGTON COUNTY RURAL TOURISM SECTOR

Urban Sites that Support Rural Tourism
Though most of this research focused on rural sites,

certain sites within the urban area play a visible role
in supporting rural activities and related tourism. Figure 3.7: Farmers Market Participation
Farmers markets are primary examples. Of the 127
rural sites analyzed, however, only a relatively small
segment indicated participation at off-farm farmers
markets, perhaps focusing more on direct sales via
on-site farm stands (see Figure 3.7).

            Discoveries in Rural Tourism
Both the consultant's research on 279 rural tourism
attractions and County staff’s expanded research
on 127 rural tourism sites, as discussed above,
are meant to provide a very general reflection of
rural tourism in Washington County today. Their
intent is to give an idea of rural tourism's current
distribution, variety of forms, and the range of

property types (based on their primary use) that
            offer it in the County.

The remainder of this chapter looks further into the
role of rural tourism here and elsewhere.
