World music sales have been stagnant. Music executives claim that the world is holding its breathe waiting for 'the next big thing'. But is that really the case?
The UK market wasn't stagnant, we had healthy growth thanks to the Spice Girls, Manic Street Preachers and Robson & Gerome over the past year. Notably singles sales were up by more than 10% which is interesting.
People would rather pay two pounds for the one song they know they like, having heard it on the radio, than risk pay twelve or fifteen pounds for an album which may only have one or two good songs. Of course albums are still selling, when I can I always go for albums. But with music available on-line that won't always be the case. You could pay a fee of 50p to listen to a new song once or pay five pounds to be able to play the song 500 times. That way one could just call off a music server the songs that we wanted to hear when we wanted to hear them. No more piles of CDs. And you only pay for what you want.
