Here in England newspapers have been slower to adopt the Internet than their US counterparts. But they've finally warmed to the idea and are providing some good content. Here are some of the sites provided by the broadsheets.

First on the scene was Electronic Telegraph from The Daily Telegraph. This site has been innovative and is quite good but the URLs to each page are unnecessarily complex and the design, though clear, is beginning to look a bit tired. Also you need to register for parts which sucks!

The Guardian Online is a blindingly fast site, I mean REALLY fast! The graphics are clean, modern and the content is excellent, as would be expected from this paper. My only gripe is that sometimes navigation isn't that clear. The names of certain areas aren't self-explanatory but generally its pretty good. A plus point is that you don't need to register to use the site.

The Times Internet Edition uses an innovative design to replicate the newspaper feel. The entire newspaper and more is available. Its quite fast and an excellent source of information. I like it but you need to register to use any part of it all which really sucks. Apart from that this site is brill.

So pretty good so far. The question remains over what they can do to take this new media format one step further? The newspapers might get left behind unless they start incorporating more interactive discussions which seemed to be slightly lacking. Can traditional stalwarts of English life change enough to survive? Well the Independent seemed less than concerned as they don't even have a site!
