ate Blanchett, the best
actress Oscar frontrunner
of this awards season, is always
a regal presence on the red
carpet. “It helps when you have
someone else doing your hair
and makeup,” the 44-year-
old Australian actress says,
downplaying the fact that her
poise, aristocratic good looks
and porcelain skin make her a
standout at any event. “And
when you’re wearing a piece of
Armani couture that has been
tailored to you, half the job is
done. That’s a pleasure and a
privilege.” We caught up with

— to get her thoughts
on the challenges of playing
the film’s titular character, a
deeply troubled New York
socialite whose husband gets
mixed up in a Ponzi-like scam,
and what it’s like to work with
Allen. The 1998 Academy
Award-winner also talked
about working with husband
Andrew Upton, a playwright,
screenwriter and theater artistic
director, and her hopes for their
three sons.
