Take off and smell
the coffee
With our new on-board coffee proving a hit,
we meet the mother of four from Shropshire
behind the unique blend
most people who’ve
had a great business idea can pinpoint
their specific eureka moment. For Carrie Bate, it happened in
her kitchen one August afternoon in 2011. “My husband was
planning a camping trip,” she explains. “I was trying to come
up with a way that he could enjoy a nice cup of coffee
without the need for a machine. I thought, ‘Why not put
ground coffee into a bag, similar to a tea bag?’”
And so the seeds were sown for the Little Bag Coffee
Company. The first thing she did was seek out a professional
Coffee Master to help her create a signature blend of beans.
Then she started developing a working bag that would allow
anyone to grab a great-tasting caffeine fix on the move,
without the need for any other equipment.
Eight months after that brainwave, Carrie put the finishing
touches on her first handmade sample, sealing it with an iron in
that same kitchen. Since then, her business has never looked
back, and today you’ll find those sachets on the shelves at
Harvey Nichols department store.
In from the cold
Join UNICEF in helping Syria’s children
bushra is 11.
She lives in a small tent with her family in a
refugee camp in Jordan. There’s no light or heating and it’s a
15-minute walk to the nearest toilet. They can queue for
nine hours to get food. Bushra has one wish: to go to school.
With the conflict in Syria into its third year, children
continue to pay the heaviest price. More than six million are
in urgent need of aid in what is the largest humanitarian
operation in history. Forced to seek refuge in neighbouring
countries, where they often arrive with nothing but the
clothes on their backs. Many have lost everything.
UNICEF, the world’s leading organisation for children, is
working to deliver vital aid there and, this winter, easyJet is
supporting its appeal. You can play your part and help
UNICEF’s vital work by placing your spare change or foreign
currency in the collection pouch on your flight today.
When you fly to or from the UK, the UK Government will
match your donation. That means for every pound you
donate, UNICEF will receive two.
