post-industrial eyesore. That year, a firm of Dutch
architects, Jo Coenen & Co, won a redevelopment
competition. Their novel proposal was to retain two of
the huge blast furnaces and other gigantic sections of
the steel-making process, and build a university town
around these relics.
The conversion of Belval is costing €450 million and,
when the first students move in, they’ll discover that
their library has been hollowed out of the old furnace
complex and, to get to lectures, they’ll weave in and out
of gantries across which molten metal was once
transported. As well as the University of Luxembourg,
Belval will also contain the National Archives and a
business ‘incubator’ for developing new enterprise. But,
most excitingly, students will find they’re living on top
of the biggest, coolest, music venue in this part of Europe
– even if it still looks like a steelworks.
