When did you start coming here?
“I first heard about The Shipping
Forecast when it opened in 2010. They
launched it with this really interesting
promotional campaign that went viral
– they put up loads of posters around
the streets of Liverpool and I thought
it sounded really cool.”
What’s the appeal?
“It’s great to hang out in. The venue has
the best of all worlds. You’ve got the
upstairs bar, which is really homely and
has strange installations and artworks
and a nice fireplace. It’s got a really
good food menu too, called Ruby Jean’s
Diner, and the prices aren’t too bad.
Then, on the flip side, you’ve got the
downstairs room called The Hold,
which is really similar to somewhere
like Plastic People in London. It’s an
intimate basement club with low
ceilings and a great sound system,
where the DJs play with the crowd
pretty much on top of them. It’s just the
perfect place for a party.”
Who comes here?
“There’s a really cool cross section of
people and because it’s in the Georgian
Quarter, you get a sort of bohemian
crowd. You get families coming in for
dinner, then at night, it takes on a new
persona with lots of young people and
students coming in on Thursdays,
Fridays and Saturdays for the good DJs
in the bar upstairs and club nights in
The Hold downstairs.”
What’s your order?
“They do great burgers, but I always
get something called Ruby’s Fish Dog,
which is like battered, fried fish, but in a
burger. I go to Spain a lot and have a lot
of friends out there, so I love that the
Shipping Forecast has Estrella on
tap – they’re one of the few places in
Liverpool that do – so I’d go in for a
pint of that.”
What keeps you coming back?
”The staff are always really friendly and
make you feel welcome, which makes a
massive difference to me.”
