not the only draw. It’s the best starting point for exploring
the north-east coast – start at the nearbyMelissani lake,
arguably themost rewarding sailing on the whole shoreline,
while the aquamarine waters and electrifying views to
Ithaca give it a very special ambience. Take a sweaty
10-minute hike to the north-east and you’ll also find the
area’s best restaurant, the Paradise Taverna.

The coastline fromAgia Efimia to Fiscardo is achingly
beautiful: steep, ravine-scarredmountains plunge into
an arrestingly azure sea and the fragrance of sage and pine
bombards the senses. Most of the coastline is accessible only
by boat and the real fun lies in discovering the hidden coves.
The first and broadest lies just north of Agia Efimia, but the
richest rewards are further. Most of the tiny inlets don’t have
names, but all make for good snorkel stops. The Ionian Sea
lacks the glamour of some spots, but you can still find turtles,
octopus, crabs and – if you’re very lucky – dolphins.
