residents have one. Compare that to France where just one
in ten are dog owners, London where, according to the
Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association, it’s 7%; or Germany
where the figure is only 6%.
In Budapest, you’ll find dogs everywhere: waiting
outside cafés; walking the streets with or without leads;
even accompanying passengers on the Metro.
So many, in fact, that you might wonder why. Well, the
nation has a long history of canine appreciation. “We’re
very proud of our dogs,” says pet owner Krisztina Erős.
I think Hungarians have always had a connection with
these animals.”
For such a small nation, Hungary is the birthplace
of an inordinate number of pedigree breeds. Erős’s own
dog, Apollo, is a four-year-old Vizsla. These sleek animals
have recently become a favourite in urban hipster circles.
Descended from the dogs the Magyar tribes of the 10th
century used for hunting, they are one of Europe’s
