different. Although thebrainchildof theBelpietros,
Campi YaKanzi is undoubtedly aMaasai camp: runby
theMaasai for theMaasai.
Talking at the topof amountainon adawnwalkwith
local guide SundeMartine, overlookinghundreds ofmiles
of undulatingbush and listening to zebra snort and stamp
below, there’s nodoubt that this is his land, andhis
project, ofwhichhe’s proud.
Walking in the cloudforests, on topof thehills, I am
taught theplants’Maasai names and their traditional
medicinal uses (rather than themeaningless Latinnames
withwhich guides often try to impress visitors). In the
villages, I’m embracedby local women, encouraged to visit
their houses and– as a visitor toCampi YaKanzi, and so a
guest of theMaasai – given gifts of beads.
Althoughmuchof the funding for theprojects comes
fromdonations to theTrust, tourists generatemore than
€88per night per guest by staying at the camp: the
highest conservation fee of any camp inKenya. Having just
returned safely andhappily from theMaasai’s land, I have
never felt as safe, aswelcome or as valued at any other
