SherryRoper
When American Airlines employee Sherry Roper’s nephew
wasdeployed to Iraq in2006, shesent lettersandpackages to
himona regular basis. Hewrotebackand saidhis roommate
had not received anything from home. Sherry asked for his
name so she could sendhimpackages too. In thenextweek, her nephew sent her fourmorenames.
As the listgrew,Roperknewsheneededhelp, so the23-yearAAemployee, aprojectmanager inReservations,
solicitedhelp fromherAA colleagueswhoexpressedan interest inadoptinga soldier.
Roper now coordinates themailing of cards and packages to soldiers in Iraq, with assistance from dozens of
employees inReservationsandat headquarters, theAACreditUnion, theFortWorthAllianceMaintenanceBase,
andatDFWAirport. “I couldn’t do itwithout their help,”Roper says.
Thecarepackages includegoodiesofall sorts: snacks,hygiene items, socks,games,books,DVDs—evenbath
itemsandbed linens. Literallyhundredsof troopshavebeen touchedbyRoper’skindness.
Ropersometimes receiveswish listsorspecial requests,whichshealways tries toaccommodate.
Sheoncegot a request for soft toilet paper, soshesent 200 rolls. SaysRoper: “Mymaingoal is to let
eachof themknow that they areappreciatedandnot forgotten.”
AlthoughRoper’snephewhasbeenbackhome for a year, shecontinues tosendcarepackages to
the troops. “I get Christmas cards from soldierswe’veadoptedwhoarenowhome,” she says.
Hernephew isgoingback to Iraq this year, andRoperplans tosendmoreboxesandcards tohim,
aswell as toother soldiers.
