American Airlines and Susan G. Komen for the
Cure, bothwith long histories of leadership and
innovation, recently announced an expanded
partnership that giveshopeandpromise to their
dedicated fight to end breast cancer. The an-
nouncement included the unveiling of two spe-
cially co-branded aircraft, anAmericanAirlines
Boeing 757 and an American Eagle Embraer
145, eachwith the renownedpink-ribbonmotif.
The distinctive pink streamers, which extend
the full length of the fuselage of each airplane,
mark a new level of mutual commitment, as
American Airlines becomes Komen for the
Cure’s official airline and first-ever Lifetime
PromisePartner.
The partnership represents a newly created
funding category for Komen, called Promise
Grants,whicharecollaborative, interdisciplinary
research projects with strong potential to dis-
cover the cures for breast cancermorequickly.
Building on its 20-year history of support-
ing Komen nationally, American has pledged to
raise$1million annually for eight years to fund
Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s first Promise
Grant, a $7.5million, five-year study of inflam-
matory breast cancer (IBC) at the University of
Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. The re-
maining $500,000 will be used to fund health
and community programs.
The net proceeds from the annual American
Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Weekend
are the primary source of funding. Additional
Cancer Center in Houston will be conducted
through thecenter’sMorganWelch Inflammato-
ry Breast Cancer ResearchProgram andClinic,
which isnamed inmemory of a24-year-old IBC
victim and is the only such facility in theworld.
This Promise Grant will be the largest gift ever
for IBC research, according toGabrielN. Horto-
bagyi,MD, F.A.C.P., withM. D. AndersonCancer
Center.
Since the announcement, sixmore planes—
a 777 and five additional American Eagle jets
—havebeendecoratedwith thepink-ribbonde-
cal, for a total of eight airplanes that display a
tribute toAmerican’sexpandedpartnershipwith
Komen. Theeight planesarenotable in that one
in eight women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer.

fortheCureprogram, inwhichAAdvantagemem-
bers earn fivemiles for each dollar contributed
toKomen, with a $25minimum donation. Since
mid-April, more than 7,250 AAdvantage mem-
bershave contributedover$682,000.
