If you’ve ever read the descriptions on AA.com of popular
American Airlines destinations such as Honolulu, New
York, and Paris, or have searched the site for informa-
tion about weather or travel-policy updates, chances are
you’ve read thework of Rita Jackson. For several years, Jackson has helped keep the content on AA.com
fresh, interesting, and informative. It’sa labor of lovebecauseJackson’spassion iswriting.
Jackson has another passion as well: promoting awareness of albinism, a rare genetic condition she
shares with about 18,000 other Americans. People with albinism lack the pigment melanin in their skin,
hair, andeyes, andmayalsohavesignificant visual impairment. Jacksonserveson theboardof theNational
Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation (
, where she assists with the group’s
fund-raising and planning activities; perhapsmost importantly, she serves as amentor for young people
and as a resource for parents. “When you don’t look like everyone else and you don’t live in the sighted
world, but you’re not in the blind world, either, there are
some specific challenges you face, especially for young people,” she says. “It helps to know that
someone’sbeen through it and is there to listen.”
In addition to advocating albinism awareness, Jackson is active in local community service. Over
the years, she has participated in a three-day AvonWalk for Breast Cancer to help raise funds to
eradicate that disease; servedas captainof anAmericanAirlines team for theLeukemia&Lympho-
maSociety’sLight theNightWalk; volunteeredata local foodbank;andevenassistedatacommunity
college bake sale. All that activity “keepsme off the streets, which the police department appreci-
ates,” she jokes. “But thebest part ismeetingpeopleandall the friendships that develop.”
