OVERTHEMOON, PART II
Welcome, AdamPitluk, to your new job as
editor of
American Way
. What a gift you
have been given with your writing talent.
How nice to read and enjoy your personal
comments in your October 1 inaugural
editorial, “Moon Shadow,” about your and
your wife Kimberly’s moon experience. A
professoronce said, “If I canhear thewriter
talking, it waswell-written.” Andwhile I’ve
neverheard you speak, I felt the sameway.
When Iwas 19, Ihad completedadisap-
pointing first year of college and hadwan-
derlust. I shipped out of San Francisco on
the World War II freighter the
American
Bear
,whichwasheaded for theOrient. The
initial segment fromSanFrancisco toJapan
was fraught with hurricane-like weather.
Instead of having the normal 13-day trip,
we limped intoYokohamaon the 18thday.
Because of the ongoing severe weather,
we seldom s w themoon.Worried that this
old ship might not weather the storms, I
was fearful and very melancholy. The few
times themoonwas visible, Iwould look at
it andwonder ifmy parentsmight be look-
ing at it at the samemoment and thinking
the same of me. Your moon story brought
back thesememories. Thank you.
