14,500 homes— for free. This change will
save an equivalent of 141 eighteen-wheel-
ers’ worth of coal from being burned. Not
to be outdone, the Australian government
passed legislation to phase out incandes-
cent bulbs and replace them with CFLs,
which will reduce Australia’s greenhouse
gas emissions by fourmillion tons by 2012
and cut household power bills by up to 66
percent.

, ethanol accounts for as much
as 20 percent of the transport-fuel mar-
ket. Gasoline consumption in the country
has been declining since the late ’70s, and
now sevenout of every 10new cars sold are
flex-fuel.Today,Brazil canmakeethanol for
as little as $1 per gallon and can produce
6,000 liters of ethanol from every two and
a half acres of sugarcane. In 1975, the yield
was only2,000 liters.

Pro Árbol (“pro tree”) campaign. The gov-

invest six billion pesos in the project this
