changes. The younger drivers, while able to
detect them, had a slow reaction time, los-
ing critical seconds.
The kicker? Kramer’s research involved
hands-free phones. It’s not the holding of
the phone that appears to be the primary
issue, he says. “It’s theproductionof speech
and the comprehension of other people’s
speech that gets in theway.”

to focus amid our multi-
sensory, multitasking world, employees
will sometimes go to extraordinary lengths,
Spira says. They’ll find an empty confer-
ence room, close the blinds and turn off
the lights, and work by the light of their
laptops. They’ll retreat to a café or a park.
They’ll hideout in theirhomeoffices
Technology, now part of the problem,
may someday help provide a solution,
Iqbal says. A computer application could
one day alert users to incoming e-mail, not
constantly but when the computer senses a
breakpoint, suchaswhena file is savedand
closed. Other options are already available,
says Spira, such as turning off your incom-
ing e-mail alert so you won’t be distracted
by thepingof newdemands.
Sometimes, though, the enemy is not
technology but human nature, he says.
“There’s a question of discipline — we all
have tobegrown-upshere.”
Foringer says her “compulsive” multi-
tasking habits are driven partly by her fear
of fallingbehind. She doesn’t, but the anxi-
ety is sometimespalpable. “I’manxious that
something is going to arise that needs at-
tention, and, for some reason,my attention
will be elsewhere,” she says.

cial treat, she told her daughter, she would
leave the BlackBerry behind. “What about
the Treo?” her savvy daughter replied. For-
inger,witha sinkingheart, realized thather
priorities were skewed. She couldn’t sever
the technological cord; the Treo was com-
ingalong.
Severalmonths later, Foringermisplaced
her purse, with the BlackBerry inside. Her
employer sent her anewone. “I didn’t acti-
vate it,” she says. “I decided that Iwas pow-
erlessover the technology.”Shereturned the
package, unopened.
