Spirited Away
a film by Hayao MiyazakiUnquestionably one of the greatest animated feature films ever made and hauntingly evocative of the experience of coming of age, Spirited Away is, simply, a film not to be missed. Japanese master animator Hayao Miyazaki has created a film that is both deft and beautiful -- a rare combination indeed -- as it creates before our eyes the unseen world of spirits that operates all about us, but that normally remains undetected by our sluggish senses. Equal parts allegory and adventure, Spirited Away visualizes and thereby helps us to come to terms with the fact that the reality within which we carry out our lives was created by those who have come before us, and that despite of their corporeal forms having passed from our earthly plane, their spirits remain among us still: in the abstract reality of our social forms -- customs, ceremonies, rituals, and countless quotidian trifles -- as well as, and no less real than, in the concrete reality of their works remaining in the forms of the cities, towns and nations that they have erected. In short, to experience this film is to finally see that civilization exists as much on the spiritual plane as on the physical, and to realize that it is this discovery -- more, perhaps, than any other -- that marks our transition from youth to maturity.
