Well, to be honest, we don't have much in the way of detailed listings in our book department.  What we do have on offer here is primarily of interest to local (i.e. Pittsburgh, PA area) customers who are curious to learn what sort of books we stock.  Beyond that we have an extremely modest offering of proprietary material consisting of in-house reviews and selected excerpts which can be reached by clicking on the links (mostly author names) below.

Please keep in mind that we do accept special orders,
both for in-print (nearly all of which we discount 10% - 20%)
and out-of-print titles.

and here's the gold standard in value:

Dover Thrift Editions

Dover publications offers an ever growing percentage of the Western (along with a healthy dose of the Eastern) Canon of classic poetry, fiction, drama, essays and treatises that are in the public domain, for the semi-miraculous prices of as low as one dollar (with a high end ceiling that is slowly edging up towards five dollars, but hasn't quite arrived there yet).   Here's the list.

Children's Books

We have one big shelf of children's picture books, and another of children's and young adult chapter books.  Most of these are brand new books offered at discounts of 50% to 75% off of retail.  You'll be surprised by the some of the great books we have at these prices.  In addition, we stock some essential children's classics, including the complete works of our personal favorite, Virginia Lee Burton.

The British Film Institute Film Classics and Modern Film Classics Series

This is a series of monographs each devoted to a single film of the author’s choosing. Primarily written by respected professors from within film studies academia, there are several exceptions, such as Salman Rushdie’s volume on The Wizard of Oz and Camille Paglia’s on The Birds.

Each volume delves into the background and context of the film’s production before getting into the meatier issues of the film’s meaning and cultural significance.  Each volume contains numerous movie stills and production photos, as well as complete credits and production information.  Often movie posters and lobby cards are included; also stills from other films for the purpose of comparison.  A great series of books, but watch out-- they're known to be addictive.  Each of these volumes helps you get to the heart of the film, and in so doing increases your understanding and appreciation of not just the film you are studying, but the form itself and the industry that makes it possible.

retail price - $12.95 each

While, yes, we do manage to employ a portion of our minimal wall space to display selected art works-- both originals and prints -- our primary offerings in the art department remain our offering of art books.
We have a broad selection of monographs, exhibition catalogues, historical surveys, critical appreciations, and general interest art and photography books, featuring many different artists and periods, but with a weighting towards the 20th Century.  Artists covered in monographs include Stuart Davis, Romare Bearden, Maxfield Parrish, Cezánne, Degas, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Kandinsky, O'Keefe, Atget,  Norman Rockwell, Aubrey Beardsley, and many, many others including much contemporary fare along the lines of graffiti art, vinyl toys and the like.

We also have a small sideline in art postcards -- we currently have over 500 different art postcards covering art from the entire spectrum.  Our supply is conveniently situated next to our easy chair, so sit back, relax anf flip through a box.  Almost all of them are 50¢ @ or 3/$1.00.

Music Books

We've assembled a nice shelf of music books that run the gamut from classical to punk.  From Jan Swafford's Guide to Classical Music to Clinton Heylin's masterful From the Velvets to the Voidoids, our music shelf is filled out with books on Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and more, including perhaps the most important of all -- one of the key overlooked texts in the American canon:  Mezz Mezzrow's timeless hipster classic charting the early days of jazz in Chicago and New York; the one that started it all:  Really The Blues.

We now carry a complement of McSweeney's books, including all in-print volumes of McSweeney's itself as well as its new sister publication, The Believer.
