A quiet month with heavy rains being the big news. Hope both your
home and work facility came through relatively dry.
With the ability to offer betting on archived horse races passed by the
Legislature, Chicago-based Revolutionary Racing purchases Colonial
Downs for $20 million raising hopes among fans like me for a resump-tion
of live racing next year. Wonder how many of our current members
were with us back in April of 1998 when we had that joint meeting with
the Hampton Roads Chapter at the almost ready to open track? They
were just finishing up work with the first racing date still ten days away
but the horses were already arriving at the track and training. Our com-bined
group of 70 had a nice dinner in the clubhouse restaurant followed
by a presentation and tour, but made one big mistake as some of us
walked out on the track during the tour and got our shoes all muddy
since it had rained earlier in the day. It was obvious who the dumb ones
were, as we got mud all over the floor of the bus on the way home and
had to clean our shoes once we arrived. Other than that, a very interest-ing
program.
While RIR, where we met in March of last year, completed their $30 mil-lion
modification to allow the fans to get more up close and personal with
the garage and pit areas. The new feature got good reviews at the re-cent
race week, only to have the France family, who owns all of NAS-CAR,
announce that they were interested in selling which started a lot of
negative conversation as to how the sport is dying. The timing of which
was not helpful to the efforts Jeff Hedrick and his team are exerting in
trying to get the interest and attendance back to where it was.
UNOS, where we had met more recently (in January of this year), also
in the news as their contract with the government was up for renewal af-ter
32 years. Bids were due by May 4, and two other outfits did consider
doing so, but never really had a chance since UNOS had developed the
software program which they didn't have to share. The challengers did
launch some criticisms however, calling UNOS “inefficient and slow to
change” and noting that 115,000 are on the waiting lists, 22 of whom die
every day.
The Faison Center, where we last met in September of '14, after they
had opened their major residence building, continues to expand, seem-ingly
adding one building a year at an approximate cost of $30 million as
