A big Thank You to Brian Workman for organizing the
big turnout from MOI at our Squirrels game! They cer-tainly
added a great deal to our group.
That contingent more than made up for the unusual absence of Bob
Borchers, who had told me last month that he wouldn't be able to make
this one as he had the responsibility for supervising event staff at UVA's
John Paul Jones Arena for the Top 100 Camp, which is one of the na-tion's
major showcase events for high school basketball players, taking
place at the same time as our meeting.
I did enjoy the opportunity to have an extended visit with Hourigan's Ka-ren
Frebert, who I hadn't realized was a native of Dover, Delaware with
a lot of time spent in the Wilmington area as she was growing up. Both
of these areas brought back memories for me from experiences in a pre-vious
career. As we watched the game, I also got a good update from
her on the progress of Dominion's new office building, which is moving
right along as it heads for a mid-2019 move in. It was also really helpful
to have Altria's Bert Lunsford sitting on the other side with his extensive
knowledge of the Squirrels' players, even without having a program to
refer to, since I haven't been following them that closely this season.
The long festering feud between the state's technology agency (VITA)
and Northrup Grumman appears to finally be coming to conclusion as
the latter's 13 year, $2.4 billion contract is scheduled to end on August
17. Northrup Grumman has notified 348 workers that they will be termi-nated,
but many of them are expected to remain under new contractor
Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), who has said they will
create an additional 75 to 80 jobs in this area. Some of our older heads
may have been at our Oct. '07 meeting down there at Meadowville Tech-nical
Park where we heard a presentation on how the state agencies
would now receive IT support from Northrup Grumman, followed by a
tour of the then new facility.
Another long running impasse appears to have been settled as GRTC
(where we met in their new building in August of '11) finally has come to
an agreement with their drivers on a new contract just in time for the
Pulse bus rapid transit line to go into action on 6/24. Why don't you join
me and take advantage of GRTC's offer of a free ride during the last
week of June, so we can make up our own minds about whether it will
be a great addition to the region's transportation network (or a boondog-gle,
as some naysayers insist) ?
Seems to be an unusual amount of movement on some high profile pro-jects,
as VCU announces two (one at each campus) as the Engineering
School's four story, 133,000 sq. ft. research building project breaks
ground, which I believe is the project Past Chapter President Sam Jen-
