Jefferson City, Mo. -- Three rushing touchdowns by Kellen Cox and a sack by Ryon Phillipsas time expired helped the Missouri Southern football team move to 3-0 as the Lions defeated Lincoln 21-14 in Jefferson City today. Southern (3-0, 3-0 MIAA) starts the season 3-0 in conference play for the first time since the 1996 season when the Lions went 4-0 to open up MIAA action. Southern is also 2-0 on the road to start the season for the first time since the 2004 season. The Lions didn’t start the game off smooth as thinking he had coaxed the Blue Tigers offsides, Cox lofted the first pass of the game up for grabs, but Lincoln came down with an interception and no penalty was called. Southern’s defense held strong, and after causing a turnover on downs, Cox rushed for a 62-yard touchdown to cap off a four-play drive and put the Lions up 7-0 early on. After Southern’s defense held the Blue Tigers Game 3 Game 4 again to a punt, the Lions’ special teams fumbled the punt and on the first play of the drive, LU ran a halfback pass from Andre Borney to Keenan Smith to tie the game at seven. The Lions would fumble another punt, but the defense again came up strong and held Lincoln scoreless the rest of the quarter. Brandon Williams would force a fumble of quarterback Jacob Morris and Alex Wong recovered leading directly to another Cox rushing touchdown, making the score 14-7, Lions. The defense would force another turnover as Demond Horsely picked off a pass from Morris on the ensuing drive, but Southern would turn the ball over on their following drive. After the Lions held Lincoln to a three and out, Cox added his third touchdown of the half, this time a one-yard run, to cap off a ten-play drive and put the Lions up 21-7 with two minutes left in the half. Cox had 25 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns, while Travis Hurd and Ne’Ronte Threatt added 55 and 49 yards, respectively. Cox was 4-10 through the air for 52 yards, while Bryant Venson, Threatt, Michael Nelson and Landon Zerkel caught a pass each. Defensively, Williams had a game for the Lions. The senior led the team with six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, a forced fumble and a half a sack. The sack moves him to 20.5 for his career as he passes Richard Jordan to move up to No. 2 all-time on the sacks list at Southern. He needs just 2.5 to tie Kent Shorten and three to become the sack king for the Lions. Joplin, Mo. -- A 38-yard touchdown run by Southwest Baptist’s Robert McWright with 6:32 to go in the fourth quarter lifted the visiting Bearcats over Missouri Southern 16-13 tonight in football action at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Southern (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) falls to SBU for just the fourth time in the 21-game series. SBU got on the board first and led 3-0 at halftime after a 33-yard field goal from John Colliver with four seconds left on the clock. The Bearcats added a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dan Connors to Zach Sohn just three minutes into the third quarter to go up 10-0. After the Lions held SBU to a three and out, Ne’Ronte Threatt took a punt to the house for a 40-yard touchdown return to bring the Lions to within three at 10-7 with 7:19 left in the third quarter. The Lions’ defense held the Bearcats to back-to-back three and outs to nearly close out the third quarter before fullback Anthony Thayer broke off a 42-yard run nearly to pay dirt, but was tackled at the SBU three yard line. Kellen Cox would finish off the drive and dive in from one to put the Lions up 13-10 after the point after failed. SBU drove nearly to the end zone on its next possession, but Demon Haire came up big with an interception in the end zone to stop the drive. The Lions would get to their own 44 yard line on the next drive, but couldn’t convert a fourth and one and gave the ball back to SBU. The Bearcats took advantage of the turnover on downs and in four plays, had the game-winner from McWright. Cox led the Lions’ offense tonight, carrying the ball 30 times for 116 yards and a score. he also completed 4-7 through the air for 52 yards. Landon Zerkel, Travis Hurd, Giresse Forchuand Threatt all caught a pass. Defensively, Brandon Williams had one of his best games of his career. He had a career-high 11 tackles, with three tackles behind the line of scrimmage, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a quarterback hurry. The two sacks gives him 22.5 for his career, just a half a sack from tying Kent Shorten for the school record in the category. Alex Wong led the Lions in tackles with 12, while Haire, Brian Rodgers and Jonathan Rogersall had seven tackles each. Jonathan Rogers and Aaron Hall combined for a sack, while Gatlin Ridgway added his first collegiate sack.
