2012 game by game Northeastern State 21, Missouri Southern 27 September 8, 2012 at Joplin, Mo. Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern football team took out visiting Northeastern State 27-21 tonight in the Lions home opener in front of more than 5,000 fans at Fred G. Hughes Stadium. The Lions (2-0, 2-0 MIAA) are 2-0 in the MIAA for the first time since the 2002 season when the Lions started the season 4-0 overall. NSU (0-2, 0-2) loses its second-straight conference game to start the season. Southern Started the game and took the opening drive and went 17 plays and 86 yards, taking 9:35 off the clock as Kellen Cox capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. NSU tied it up with a three-yard touchdown frun from Terrance Dixon as the RiverHawks used their own clock killing drive, going 73 yards on 13 plays and taking up nearly six minutes. The Lions added two more scores, both on runs from Ne’Ronte Threatt from three and 14 yards out to go up 21-7 at the half. Dixon added another touchdown six minutes Game 2 into the third quarter, this time on a pass from Johnny Deaton to cut the Lions’ lead to 21-14. The score would stay that way until the three minute mark of the fourth quarter when Bryant Venson capped off a 37-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-14. Venson made multiple cutbacks on the play to extend the run. A late score from NSU, a 69-yard pass from Deaton to Jermaine Sherman would not be enough, as for the second week in a row, the Lions sat on the ball their final possession to win the game. Southern had 325 yards on the ground to NSU’s 52, while the Lions were out-passed 287 to 35. The Lions won the time of possession battle again this week holding the ball for nearly 35 minutes of the game. Cox was the Lions leading rusher with 108 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. He had a long of 70 yards but was tripped up just shy of the end zone. Cox also completed 1-3 for ten yards, while Kyle Webster converted 2-4 for 25. Ten different Lions carried the ball tonight, as Venson had 50 yards and a score and Threatt added 37 yards and two scores. Javonte Edwards had the most carries with 13 runs and 48 yards. Defensively, Alex Wong led the way for the Lions. The senior had a team-high eight tackles. Aaron Hall had eight tackles, including one for a loss and an interception return of 12 yards, while Brandon Williams added seven tackles, two for a loss and a sack of six yards. Edmond, Okla. -- A fourth and inches run for a first down from senior quarterback Kellen Cox sealed win No. 1 for Daryl Daye and the Lions took out Central Oklahoma 25-20 in the 2012 season opener tonight in Edmond. Southern (1-0, 1-0 MIAA) ran the ball for 249 yards tonight as nine different players had rushes. Cox led the attack with 20 carries for 89 yards and a score, while he was 4-8 through the air for 43 yards. UCO (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) was led by quarterback Adrian Nelson as he went 14-26 through the air for 148 yards and one touchdown. Josh Birmingham had 19 carries for 83 yards and another score. Central started the scoring off as the Bronchos took the opening drive down field and Christian Bobo capped off an eight-play, 59-yard scoring drive with a two-yard run. The Lions answered back with a six-play, 29 yard Game 1 drive where Thayer punched it in from six. The point after was no-good, but on the ensuing possession, Jonathan Rodgers and Brandon Williams combined to sack Bronchos quarterback Nelson in the endzone for a safety, giving the Lions an 8-7 lead. Southern added another score when Cox took the ball in from two to cap off an eight-play, 53-yard drive that took 4:02 off the clock. That would be the final score of the half as the Lions led 15-7 at the half. Southern started off the scoring in the second half as Hurd rushed for nine yards to give the Lions a 22-7 lead with 12:30 in the third. A 38-yard field goal from Dallas Herndon nearly ten minutes later, capped an 8:08 minute drive for Southern and the Lions were up 25-7 with three minutes to go in the third. The Lions defense was strong in the second half as Southern held the Bronchos without a first down until the 11:31 mark of the fourth, but UCO connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass and cut the Lions’ lead to 24-14 with 8:40 left in the game. A touchdown from Birmingham cut the lead to 25-20 and the two-point try was no good with 2:12 left in the game. Brian Rodgers led the way with eight tackles and one pass break up, while Gatlin Ridgway added six stops. Williams, Breon Matlock and Ryon Phillips all had five stops, as Williams and Rogers combined to sack Nelson in the endzone for a safety. Matlock added an interception for 25 yards. The Lions had three stops behind the line of scrimmage and two fumble recoveries.
