Regi Trotter enters his seventh season as Defensive Coordinator and ninth season as the Defensive Secondary Coach for the Griffons. In 2012, the Griffon defense was third in the MIAA in pass efficiency (110.0) and scoring defense (22.21 ppg). The Griffon defense had 20 interceptions with 12 coming from his secondary. Trotter coached Mike Jordan who was the MIAA Freshman of the Year and an honorable mention All-MIAA selection, along with second team All-MIAA selection, Shane Simpson, and honorable mention All-MIAA selection Ben Jackson. In 2011, the Griffon defense was third in the MIAA in total defense giving up 353.8 yards per game. They were third in rush defense (139.4) and pass defense (214.4). Missouri Western was second in the MIAA in scoring defense giving up just 20.9 points per contest. Missouri Western was second in the MIAA with 22 interceptions, just four behind leader Pittsburg State. Trotter coached All-MIAA First Team selection (Shane Simpson), Second Team selection (Jack Long) and Honorable Mention selections (Ben Jackson and Jeremy Weston). Weston also earned Third Team Don Hansen Super Region Four honors. In 2010, Trotter’s defense was first in the league in pass defense, giving up just 198.3 yards per game and second in scoring defense, giving up just 22.2 points per contest. The Griffon secondary was also first in pass defense efficiency at 105.9 and led the league with 22 interceptions, three better than Emporia State. Trotter coached one All-MIAA First Team selection (Jack Long) and two All-MIAA Honorable Mention selections (Kendall Davis & Shane Simpson). Long was also named to the 2010 Don Hansen All-Super Region Four Third Team. In 2009, Trotter’s defense was second in the MIAA in total defense, only giving up an average of 338.5 yards per contest. Missouri Western was third in interceptions with 16 while taking three back for touchdowns. The Griffons were also second in sacks getting to the quarterback 26 times. Trotter coached one All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection in the secondary (Ian Thompson). In 2008, Trotter’s defense recorded 15 interceptions and forced 16 fumbles. His secondary broke up 35 passes. He coached two Honorable Mention All-MIAA players in the secondary (Sylvester Gibson and Nate Bruto). In 2007, Trotter’s defense recorded 21 interceptions and recorded 13 fumbles. Last season, four of Trotter’s secondary players were selected to All-MIAA teams, with one being named to the first team. Trotter came to Missouri Western after spending a season as an offensive program coordinator at the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP). Prior to UTEP, Trotter was at Cortland State University in New York, where he was an assistant coach for wide receivers and quarterbacks for two years (2002- 2003). His duties at Cortland State included serving as the team’s academic and travel coordinator. Trotter worked as assistant coach for wide receivers and running backs at Missouri Western from 1999-2002. He played for Missouri Western from 1995-1998 after coming to the Griffon football program following a stellar high school career at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo. He was named the Griffons’ Freshman of the Year in 1995 and was appointed team captain in 1998. He also received a team inspirational service award and the Chris Faros Scholarship award. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in French and bachelor of science degree in physical education from Missouri Western in 2000. Trotter has three children, Quentin, Camille and Zoe.
