Stephen Juergens DE DT LB DB DOMINATING DEFENSE The Griffons will have to replace two of the most talented defensive ends to go through the MWSU program in David Bass and Ben Pister. The Griffons look to do this with sophomore Janis Matulis and junior college transfer John Oglesby. Austin Baska will be the lone senior on the defensive line this season. Baska finished last season with 11.5 tackles for loss. Along with Baska, the Griffons will look for sophomore Arbanas Elliott and freshman Kurt Petroll to clog up the middle. The Griffon linebacker squad will be the leader of the defense. They return All-MIAA performer Stephen Juergens along with Wallace Carter, Nick Williams and Yomi Alli. The four of them combined for 19 tackles for a loss and four interceptions in 2012. The Griffons lost two of their four starters in the secondary to graduation. Returners include MIAA Freshman of the Year Mike Jordan who had four interceptions and junior free safety Marc Harrison who had 82 tackles a season ago. As a whole, the unit finished first in the MIAA in quarterback sacks, third in scoring defense, third in pass efficiency defense and third in interceptions.
