pirate asistant coaches HAMPTON PREVIEW COACHES PIRATES MEAC OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS POSTSEASON Delbert Cowsete Defensive Line Coach Delbert Cowsette is entering his third year with the Hampton University football program, serving as the defensive line coach under head coach Donovan Rose. Making his return to the program, Cowsette was a collegiate standout who went on to play in the NFL, and he brings a wealth of experience to the Pirates. In 2010, Cowsette tutored two All-Americans on the defensive end: Kenrick Ellis and Brandon Peguese, which helped the Pirate defense finish in the top three nationally in total defense in 2010. The Pirate defense also finished No. 1 in red zone stops. Ellis was named an SBN Black College, Phil Steele, Walter Camp, Associated Press and Sports Network FCS All-American – on top of being named the BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Defensive Player of the Year, also earned the CFPA FCS Defensive Tackle of the Year award. Ellis was also named to the Sweet 63 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America team. He was also named First Team All-MEAC. Peguese was named a Football Championship Subdivision All-Star on Defense by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), Peguese was also a member of the Black College Football Defensive Team, First Team Sports Network FCS All-American and First Team All-MEAC selection. He also ranked second in the conference in tackles for loss with 23.5 for a total of 94 yards Cowsette was a four-year player for the University of Maryland, where he was team captain his senior year while earning All-ACC honors. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in geography (with a double minor in sociology and graphic design), Cowsette was drafted by the Washington Redskins and played for the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears from 2000-06. Cowsette began his coaching career in 2007 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, before moving on to become an assistant defensive line coach in 2008-09. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Cowsette is married to Alena Cowsette. They have three children: Laila (7), Delbert II (4) and Joseph Cowsette. He is a co-founder of the Premiere Intermediate Football League (wwwgopifl.com), and he owns the non-profit youth organization In Between The Lines (www.ibtlsports.com). David Banks Runing Backs Coach David Banks is entering his second season as an assistant coach with the Hampton University football program, where he will primarily work with the team’s running backs. Banks’ first season with the Pirates was a success on the ground; not only did Hampton rank fifth in the MEAC with 148.1 rushing yards per game to go along with 15 touchdowns, but senior Jeremiah Schwartz became the first Pirate since 2009 to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He led the MEAC with 115.9 rushing yards per game and was a First Team All-MEAC selection. Pirate running backs averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 2012. Prior to coming to Hampton, Banks coached the offensive and defensive lines for the European champion Calanda Broncos – a team on which he worked with former NFL, Canadian Football League, and NFL Europe players. He also has experience coaching college at the Division II, Division III, and Football Bowl Subdivision level. Banks received his undergraduate degree in political science from Valdosta State in 1996. He spent three seasons on Valdosta State’s football team as a wide receiver, helping the team win the first playoff game in program history. He also earned a Master’s in communication studies from New Mexico State in 2010. After serving as a graduate assistant and quality control coach at New Mexico State, Banks went to North Carolina Pembroke, where he served as running backs coach. Prior to his stint at New Mexico State, Banks spent the 2007 season as the quarterbacks coach at La Verne. Despite capturing just one victory that season, the Leopards’ quarterbacks completed nearly 60 percent (225-for-387) of their passes and averaged better than 254 passing yards per contest. Banks spent the 2005 and 2006 campaigns in Marshall, Texas, at East Texas Baptist where he coached both the defensive line in his initial season, before taking on a dual role as both defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2006. Banks began his coaching career at Greenville (Ill.) College where he skippered both the offensive and defensive lines, but he has also spent time in the high school ranks as well at his alma mater, Norcross (Ga.) High School. In 2005, he attained his first professional coaching stint in Innsbruck, Austria, as a member of the Swarco Raiders coaching staff.
