head coach donovan rose HAMPTON PREVIEW COACHES PIRATES MEAC OPPONENTS REVIEW RECORDS POSTSEASON The Pirates also finished the season fourth in the MEAC in passing defense (183.9 yards per game), and senior defensive back Micah Pellerin was named First Team All-MEAC. In 2010, the Pirates finished No. 1 in the FCS national rankings in the red zone defense, No. 3 in total defense (271 yards per game) and No. 4 in pass defense (141 yards per game). Rose has attracted attention from both the American Football Coaches Association and the NFL. He recently participated in AFCA mentoring programs in 2010/ 2011at the annual national conventions. In 2007, he participated in the NCAA Expert Football Coaching Academy in Miami and also earned internships with the Miami Dolphins in 1996, San Diego Chargers in 2000/ 2001 and the New York Giants in 2002. Rose not only gives his time on the field, but also in the community. Since 1992, Coach Rose has redirected the lives and provided meaningful life skill opportunities for thousands of youth in Hampton Roads. In 2006, Rose received the prestigious L.D. Britt, M.D. Community Service Award for his involvement and untiring service with youth and student athletes. In 2003 Donovan was awarded the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in Division I-AA and the All-American Football Foundation Mike Campbell Top Assistant Coach Award. A 1979 graduate of Hampton University with a degree in business management, Rose was an All- CIAA performer who was named the conf e r e n c e ’ s De f e n s i v e Player of the Year during his senior year. Donovan also earned All-American honors and was named a starter and captain on the 1978 All Star Team which was played in New Orleans Super Dome. He later signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent in 1980, and also played for several championship teams in the Canadian Football League, winning the Grey Cup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984. In 1986, he joined the Miami Dolphins and led the team in interceptions. Rose retired from professional football in 1988. Rose a native of Norfolk, Va. is married to the former Miss Hampton University (1981) Sylvia Woody, Esq., a native of Tampa, Fla., and they are the parents of two children: Deja (24), a recent graduate of Georgetown University, and Donovan Jr. (17), a rising 12th grader at Grafton High School. hamptonpirates.com 2013 Hampton Football 43
