POSTSEASON RECORDS REVIEW OPPONENTS MEAC PIRATES COACHES PREVIEW HAMPTON head coach donovan rose Donovan Rose is entering his 23rd season with the Hampton University Pirates football program. Coach Rose brings a wealth of knowledge, impeccable character, and the respect from the players, assistant coaches, school administrators and the community. “With the tradition, family atmosphere and the roots that I have here at Hampton University, I definitely feel honored to be the head coach at my alma mater, Hampton University. Hampton has always been known for its academics and athletic achievements. With hard work, determination, discipline, and commitment from my coaches and players, I am very optimistic that we will compete and restore the luster to make Hampton a force to be reckoned with again.” Since Rose’s return to Hampton in 1991, the Pirates have won 14 championships, graduated over 225 student-athletes and placed over 50 players in professional leagues. Rose has developed and placed several players in the pros and recruited several players who were either drafted or became free agents in the NFL. His most notable recruits have been Cordell Taylor, second-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1998, and Kendall Langford, third-round pick and starting defensive end for the Miami Dolphins in 2008. Entering his fifth year as head coach, Coach Rose has changed the mind set of his players as well as hired knowledgeable coaches who are poised, demanding, and share his vision. Rose’s philosophy and coaching style is simple: educate and inspire our players to be the best they can be on and off the field. “Ultimately,” Rose said, “I want to build a strong, fast, tough, smart team that’s discipline, committed and competes on the highest level ever year.” In four seasons as head coach of the Pirates, Rose is 21-22 overall, including a 3-7 mark last season. All three wins came against MEAC competition, as the Pirates went 3-5 in league play while dealing with a combination of youth and injuries. Despite the Pirates’ struggles, the team did see its first 1,000-yard rusher since 2009, when senior Jeremiah Schwartz rushed for 1,043 yards and led the MEAC with 115.9 rushing yards per game. Schwartz was named First Team All-MEAC. Rose had a 7-4 mark in 2011 – a year in which the Pirates ranked third in the MEAC in scoring offense and fourth in scoring defense. 42 2013 Hampton Football hamptonpirates.com
